My friend Anthony just pointed me at this post from Larry Page 12 years ago. Apparently, he never found a solution. The first Google web crawler was written in Python instead.

Actually there was a reply. The Groups link was just pointing to an individual message rather than to the thread.

Too bad they rewrite it in C++ (I guess), maybe Python would have conquered the world faster.
